40% of the multinationals present on the national territory are Italian, while 60% come from abroad. Furthermore, more than half of the total (69%) is mainly distributed in five regions of Italy, namely:

  • 29,1% in Lombardy
  • 11,7% in Emilia Romagna
  • 11,3% in Veneto
  • 10,5% in Lazio
  • 6% in Tuscany (Assobiomedica)

The main market for which the sale of medical devices is intended is represented by public health, even if since 2015 exports have grown by 8.1% compared to the previous year, reaching 7 billion euros, and covering especially the US and UK markets.

In the same year, imports also recorded an increase of 7.3 billion euros, growing by 6% compared to the previous year, particularly affecting the biomedical sector. (Assobiomedica)

To encourage the country’s economic recovery, the government has also intervened with a series of measures concerning the health sector.

In particular, the 2016 Stability Law contains four different lines of intervention, namely:

  • Return plans for hospitalization and care facilitiesa
  • New rules for the purchase of goods and services
  • Update of Essential Assistance Levels (LEA) and implementation of the monitoring system
  • Promotion of the National Program for Health Technology Assessment (Analysis of the 2016-2019 scenario)

These interventions aim to exert a strong and growing pressure on public expenditure, in order to reduce its level, especially with reference to healthcare and medical devices.
